Civil Engineering Technology Students in Classroom

Program Information

Civil Engineering Technology is a great starting point if you're interested in a career that will shape the future of the built environment around us and the infrastructure we depend on. You'll take classes in statics, steel and concrete design, CAD, soil mechanics, hydrology and hydraulics, surveying, highway design, and construction management, in addition to the core courses of English, math, social science, and physical education. The program provides the technical knowledge and skills necessary to start a career in the industry or transfer to a four-year college. Graduates typically begin their careers as engineering technicians providing support to senior engineers.

Upon completion of the two-year program, you should be competent in the following areas:

  • Ability to apply knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve well-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.
  • Ability to design solutions for well-defined technical problems and assist with the engineering design of systems, components, or processes appropriate to the discipline.
  • Ability to apply written, oral, and graphical communication in well-defined technical and non-technical environments; and an ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature.
  • Ability to conduct standard tests, measurements, and experiments and to analyze and interpret the results.
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of a technical team.

See semester-by-semester degree plan.

Accreditation

The Civil Engineering Technology Program is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org.

Transfer Opportunities

Preparing our students for transfer to four-year baccalaureate programs is a significant focus area for our program. Articulation and/or joint admissions agreements between MVCC and four-year colleges like SUNY Polytechnic Institute ease the transfer of most or all credits when students transfer to four-year colleges.

Career Opportunities

Many graduates of MVCC's two-year Civil Engineering Technology program choose to enter the workforce. Career opportunities can be found in a number of specialized fields, including the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of all components of infrastructure. Graduates may be employed by state and local government agencies, private engineering firms, construction contractors, testing agencies, and more.
