Since 1997, Mohawk Valley Community College has proudly hosted the Theodore “Ted” Moore Run/Walk to honor the memory of the beloved math professor and support a scholarship in his name. However, after the 27th annual race in April 2024, the Run/Walk Committee, Moore’s family, and the MVCC community have made the difficult decision to bring the event to a close.

“This is a bittersweet moment for all of us,” said Deanna Ferro-Aurience, Executive Director of Institutional Advancement and the MVCC Foundation. “We have loved bringing the community together each year to celebrate Ted’s legacy. We are incredibly grateful to his family, the event committee, and everyone who has participated in, supported, and shared this journey. Ted’s impact lives on — not just in the scholarship, but in the countless lives he touched.”

Associate Professor Theodore “Ted” Moore was tragically taken from his family, friends, and students in December 1996 due to the actions of a drunk driver. A dedicated member of the MVCC Mathematics Department from 1981 until his passing, Moore was known for his unwavering support of students, commitment to his community, and ability to bring people together. His loss deeply affected his colleagues and students at MVCC. With the theme “None for the Road,” the Ted Moore Run/Walk was created to honor Moore’s memory while reinforcing the College’s opposition to driving while under the influence of alcohol. Proceeds from the event have funded the Theodore “Ted” Moore Memorial Scholarship and supported local organizations focused on drug and alcohol prevention and treatment.

The first Ted Moore Run/Walk was held in 1997, the same year Moore was posthumously inducted into the MVCC Hall of Fame. Over the past 27 years, the event has raised thousands of dollars for the scholarship, which is endowed with more than $200,000 in the account, assuring that Moore’s legacy will support generations of students to come.

Although the race has come to an end, MVCC remains dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving. To honor Moore’s memory, the MVCC Foundation will send an annual message highlighting the recipients of the Ted Moore Memorial Scholarship, ensuring that his impact continues to inspire students.
