Program Information

Civil Engineering Technology Students in Classroom

The Mechanical Engineering Technology program prepares students to fill mechanical engineering technician (or related) career fields. It also lays a foundation for students who plan on pursuing a four-year mechanical technology curriculum. The program includes topics in technical computing, mechanical analysis, manufacturing systems, and material testing.

Graduates of the Mechanical Engineering Technology program typically begin their careers as engineering technicians providing support to senior engineers. Additional career opportunities include construction inspection, materials testing, infrastructure maintenance and more. This two-year program also prepares students to continue their studies at the baccalaureate level.

Prospective students should take three years of rigorous college preparatory mathematics (four are recommended), including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. One year of high school, laboratory science is required (chemistry and physics are recommended). The Computer-Aided Drafting certificate or AOS Degree may serve as preparation for this program; check with the Physical Sciences, Engineering & Applied Technologies Department for an advisor.

Program Educational Objectives

  1. Graduates will obtain employment in the Mechanical Engineering
    Technology field and/or continue in their field(s) of interest to
    successfully contribute to a diverse and global workplace by using the
    technical and organizational skills they acquired in the MET program.
  2. Graduates will maintain and foster a positive environment in the
    workplace conducive to teamwork, professionalism, and continuous
    improvement.
  3.  Graduates will, within two to three years upon graduation, have
    progressed in their technical careers to levels of higher responsibility
    and/or will have completed additional education development to meet the
    needs of employers in the region.

Student Outcomes

    Graduates have:
  1. An ability to apply knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of
    mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve well-defined
    engineering problems appropriate to the discipline
  2. An ability to design solutions for well-defined technical problems and
    assist with the engineering design of systems, components, or processes
    appropriate to the discipline
  3. An ability to apply written, oral, and graphical communication in
    well-defined technical and non-technical environments; and an ability to
    identify and use appropriate technical literature
  4. An ability to conduct standard tests, measurements, and experiments and
    to analyze and interpret the results
  5. An ability to function effectively as a member of a technical team

Transfer Opportunities

Preparing our students for transfer to four-year baccalaureate programs is a significant focus area for our program. We assist students with resumes, transfer applications, letters of recommendation and more.  Articulation agreements between MVCC and other schools ease the transfer of most or all credits when students transfer to four-year colleges. MVCC has articulation and/or joint admissions agreements with four-year universities including SUNY Polytechnic Institute and others.

Career Opportunities

Many graduates choose to enter the workforce after completing their two-year degree at MVCC. Career opportunities can be found in specialized fields including design, construction, assembly, operation, along with the maintenance and troubleshooting of mechanical/manufacturing systems. Graduates of the Mechanical Engineering Technology program may be employed state/federal government agencies, private engineering firms, testing agencies, and more
